Team Spencer Shines

TEAM SPENCER SHIRT

It was a sea of orange all over Georgetown on Friday.  In honor of Spencer, we sported Team Spencer shirts, shaved heads and walked.  Many of our staff and students raised money for the Georgetown FUN RUN.

Five staff members (Mr. Rob, Mr. Gort, Mr. Bowen, Mr. Bialochowski and Mr. Kooiker) promised to have their heads shaved if 100 students participated in the run.  We reached that goal and the school itself raised over $5,000 to help the Meyer family cover medical expenses.  In addition, several of our students shaved their heads to support Spencer in his fight against cancer.

The Shaving Begins
Bald and Proud

News 3 was on hand to cover the event.  You can watch it here:  Georgetown supports TEAM SPENCER    There are two more events ahead, the May 9 5th/3rd Fun Run and the May 12 Riverbank Run.  Michele Sytsma, a Georgetown parent, is organizing both events.

One of my favorite sites of the day was  watching Spencer’s class participate.  Check out this line of orange kindergarteners walking for their buddy, Spence!

Head Shaving Group GROWS!

We have had many requests to hold a fun run at school to accommodate families that cannot make it to the May 9 5th/3rd Fun Run or the May 12 RiverBank Run.
The Georgetown Fun Run will be held on May 4 at 2 pm on the Georgetown Walking Path.  All students will be able to walk in honor of all those we know who have fought or are fighting cancer.
Originally, Mr. Gort and Mr. Kooiker set a challenge of shaving his head if 100 students donated $1.00 or more to Spencer’s medical expense fund.  However, that group has grown to a total of five staff members willing to shave their hair for Spencer. These staff members are:  Mr. Kooiker, Mr. Gort, Mr. Rob (our custodian), Mr. Bialochowski and Mr. Bowen!   We will open the run with head shaving IF we can get 100 students to donate toward Spencer’s Meyer’s Medical Fund.

Your form must be in by Friday, April 27…with your donation money.
You also have the OPTION of getting a TEAM SPENCER T-SHIRT.  These are $5.00.
To register, print this form:  TEAMSPENCERFUNRUNSCHOOL Reg. Form
NOTE:  If your child is participating in the 5th/3rd Fun Run or Riverbank, their donation is sufficient for the school fun run.  You do not need to donate to both.  Their donation will also be counted in the 100 kids goal.

Introducing MILO!

If you have not yet heard about Milo, I would like to introduce him through the blog.  Milo is a 9 week old cavachon-poo mix (King Charles Spaniel + Bichon and Toy Poodle).  Milo belongs to me and my hope is to train him to take on the title of Georgetown’s Therapy Dog.

Milo: Taking a Snooze

To prepare for his AKC therapy training, Milo is coming to school with me each day with the purpose of learning how to be calm and well behaved in the classroom setting.  His training begins this summer  with the goal of being certified as an AKC Canine Good Citizen Therapy Dog.   Therapy dogs are not assistive or companion dogs.  A dog like Milo is trained to provide affection and comfort. Our target would be the students and staff at Georgetown.

Any dog can be a therapy dog.  However, it is essential that this dog have a good temperament and be friendly, patient, confident, gentle, and calm in all types of situations. We want Milo to be content while being petted and handled by students.  Milo will be able to provide comfort when being read to, walked and demonstrating his skills (tricks).

(NOTE:  Milo is not a recess dog or a classroom pet.  His role would be to provide comfort during learning times.  He is hypo-allergenic and also will not be in classrooms if a child has a severe allergy to pet dander of any kind.  As always, health and safety of our children will be the priority.)

While at home with me, Milo is learning the basics of dog training:  Going potty outside, sleeping all night, nibble on toys not fingers and  basic commands (sit, down, shake, stay, release).  At school, Milo is learning how to stay calm when bells ring, many hands pet him and sleeping while learning is going on.  To pass his first level of training, he and I must be able to do the following together:

  • Accepting a friendly stranger.
  • Sitting politely for petting.
  • Allowing basic grooming procedures.
  • Walking on a loose lead.
  • Walking through a crowd.
  • Sitting and lying down on command and staying in place.
  • Coming when called.
  • Reacting appropriately to another dog.
  • Reacting appropriately to distractions.
  • Calmly enduring supervised separation from me.

I will keep you posted on his progress.  I, and the staff, are very excited about his temperament and skills so far.  If all goes well, he will be at school next year 2-3 days per week working with children in classrooms.

Check out this collection of photos from his first two weeks at Georgetown!

Our 30th Week of School

Wow!  Not only is it week 30 of the 2011-12 school year, we also have just 8 weeks remaining!  To help us get ready to wrap up this school year and prepare for another, be sure to respond to the Parent Survey for class lists (grades PK-4).  If you have a 5th grader, there is not need to complete this survey because your child will be heading onto Baldwin Middle School next year.  This survey will be open until May 1.

We are also preparing for our annual JUST WRITE Celebration.  This will be the week of May 14-18.  We have T-Shirts available for writers to wear on their special celebration day–and we encourage them to have their classmates sign the shirts.  Order forms for this can be found on our JUST WRITE is COMING post.

Of course, there are many other events coming up.  Please pay careful attention to the school calendar and your child’s class blog.  Watch for field trips, field days, celebrations of all kinds and details about the final day of school (June 8 – dismissal at 1 pm.).

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE…… We are hoping that everyone had a great Spring Break.  Now we are all rejuvenated for the remainder of the school year!  With that being said, it is hard to believe we only have 8 WEEKS of school remaining.  Hold on tight because it will fly by!!  Just a couple of things directly from the office, OTC and prescription meds and snacks.  Medications….. MUST be brought to school by a PARENT, NOT a student!  We also have to have a medication form filled out in order to dispense these.  If it is a prescription med the form MUST be completed by a physician.  These forms are here in the office or you can find them online.  As far as snacks go we seem to be having a lot of students come down due to forgetting their snacks for morning break.  We do keep snacks in the office for special circumstances, however lately we have been flying through them due to students just forgetting.  We appreciate your help at home with this matter.  Thank you!

LUNCH INFORMATION……… Here is the April lunch menu and a new deposit slip if you need one.   April 2012 Hud Elem     Menu Deposit Slip

BIKES/RIPSTICKS/ETC…….  With spring along come bikes and ripsticks!  With that being said, PLEASE REMEMBER to send a note with your child to their teacher giving them permission to ride/walk/ripstick home.  Unless you have done so, the teacher will be required to send them home however they normally get home, such as the bus!  Thank you for your help in this matter  : )

SPENCER MEYER BENEFIT EVENTS…….  As many of you know, Spencer Meyer is a very special Kindergarten student here at Georgetown in Mrs. Estefan’s class and his parents, Jason and Jodi, are also staff members within the district.  Spencer is battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and in March the family was informed that the cancer had returned in his spine.   The entire district is helping to raise money for the SPENCER MEYER BENEFIT FUND and we have a few things to let you know about.  These are great ways to help the family in this time of need!!

BENEFIT BASKETBALL GAME…….. will be held Friday, April 27 at 7:00pm at the High School.  This will be great night of fun for everyone!!  The game will be between the staff at Baldwin Middle and Riley Middle.  It will be the “Baldwin Street Ballers vs. Riley Street Rim-Rattlers”!  Doors will open at 6:30pm and entrance fees will be a VOLUNTARY DONATION to the Spencer Meyer Fundraiser!  Please come out and join us to show your support for the Meyer family!  Lots of fun things and the Eagle’s Landing will be selling $1.00 Squishees (slushees), there will be Jet’s Pizza, Jimmy John’s, pop and candy!  What could be better?!  So MARK your calendars for FRIDAY, APRIL 27!!

COMMUNITY NEWS……..  MAY SCHOOL ELECTION………  On May 8 Hudsonville voters will be asked to approve the annual renewal of the 18 mill non-homestead property tax.  This is a tax on businesses and second homes, not on homestead residences or qualified agricultural property.  State Education Taxes  on homestead residences will remain at the 1994 millage rate.
