BLOG BITS 3/25/11

HAPPY LAST FRIDAY BEFORE SPRING BREAK!!!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE…….. Well we had a pretty uneventful week here at Georgetown.  Now don’t take that wrong……. that is not a bad thing!  Just smooth sailing!  : )   Drum roll please…… ONLY 4 more school days until Spring Break! YIPPEE ~~~~    One more thing, DO NOT FORGET about our 5th Grade fundraiser breakfast this Saturday at Vitale’s!  You may purchase tickets at the door for $7 each.  It will be held from 9am to 11 am.

TALENT SHOW NEWS…….. Remember this will be next Thursday, March 31.  If your child will be performing you will receive something home to let you know at which performance they will be in.  We are having two shows, one at 9:15 am and one at 1:15 pm.  Also do not forget that if you are unable to make  this, Mrs. Reagan records both shows and posts them on our school blog so you will not have miss it!

MAY 3 BOND ELECTION……. We are so fortunate to be in a school community which is growing. Over the past 5 years, Hudsonville Public Schools has
grown by 604 students. This trend is not new to Hudsonville as our enrollment has almost tripled over the last 25 years.  In an effort to address the need for additional classroom space, our Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution to go before voters with a bond request. The proposal to be voted on May 3 calls for:
•New 9+ building on the existing high school site
•New South Elementary located on Greenly Street
•New competition pool and fine arts auditorium
•New transportation facility
•Reconfiguring the Freshman Campus to an Early Childhood Center
•Technology upgrades to all school buildings
•Athletic upgrades at Baldwin, Riley, and High School
Since the district is part of the School Bond Revolving Fund (SBRF), which the state makes available to rapidly growing districts, we will be able to build the facilities and improvements without a millage increase. Currently, the districts levies  7.0 mills for debt retirement and the rate will remain at 7.0 mills. The total cost of the proposal will be $82,000,000.00. If  you have questions please visit our website, www.hudsonvillepublicschools.org or call our superintendent, Nick Ceglarek,  616-669-1740 ext 1.

YEARBOOKS…….. Your student should have brought home their yearbooks home this week.  The Office just wants to let you know that we have “extra” yearbooks for sale in the office.  These will be sold for $10 per yearbook. They will be available on a first come, first serve basis.  If you will be writing a check, please make it payable to “GEORGETOWN ELEMENTARY”.

The Week Ahead: March 7-10, 2011

The upcoming week will be four days of school for students and five days for teachers.  Friday, March 11 is a Professional Development day that provides teachers with an opportunity to attend classes to learn strategies to improve instruction.

Many thanks to everyone who attend Parent/Teacher Conferences last week.  As a school, we had an attendance rating of 99% and those who could not attend are conferencing with the teachers by phone or via email.  Collectively, as a staff, we feel incredibly fortunate to work with your children each day.  Thank you for all you to do help us to learn how to advance your child intellectually, socially and emotionally each year.

I want to offer up a HUGE THANK YOU to the parents who provided us with a just perfect soup bar for dinner the first night of conferences.  The teachers are with their students all day long and begin conferences 45 minutes after the students depart for the day.  The soup and desserts were a real treat for all of us.  Much of the conversation at dinner revolved around this topic:  WE HAVE THE BEST PTC IN THE WORLD!

The snapshot of the week ahead is below.   Our PTC meeting is this week Thursday at 10am in the Media Center.  (Two of our meetings per year are in the morning….a request that has been made by parents who cannot make evening meetings.)   Please note that our Superintendent, Mr. Nick Ceglarek, will be the keynote speaker.  He will be sharing information about the upcoming bond vote (May 3) and the district’s long term strategic plan.  PLEASE COME IF YOU CAN!

Have a great week.

They read HOW many words?

million

Look at the photo above.  Pictured are students in grades 3-5, Chloe, Quinn, Matthew, Ezra, Cam and Hunter.  If you had to guess how many words they have EACH read in the past few months, would you say:

  • 6000
  • 420.003
  • 560,321
  • 1,000,000
  • If your answer was #4, ONE MILLION WORDS, you are correct!

Each of these Georgetown students has read 1,000,000 words earning them a place in the honorable and highly sought after GEORGETOWN MILLIONAIRES CLUB.  This CLUB was initiated last year with 12 voracious readers who were awarded t-shirts and certificates at the end of the 2009-10 school year.  Please note that Matthew Lawrence has now read 2,000,000 words…and rumor has it that he is closing in on another million!

I thought it would be a great idea to get a photo in the library with these readers surrounded by the books they consume.  However, each time I asked them to say “CHEESE”, one or more had their faces looking into an open book!

    readers

This year they will each sign out the PTC donated NOOK e-reader with a story of their choice. The NOOK will then make it’s way from millionaire to millionaire to millionaire.  We hope these readers can provide feedback on the value of adding more e-readers to our school library in the future.

And for those of you who think it is impossible to read one million words, YOU CAN SAY THAT NO MORE!  Mrs. VandenBerg tracks in school reading for those who do book blogs, reading counts quizzes and other projects for reading.  You can also keep track of your reading at home by using a form created by Mrs. VandenBerg.  You can print this form and complete it at home:  Million word club.

    Father/Daughter Dance Thank You

enchThe evening was a great success as a result of the many people who came together! Because of all your help, the ENCHANTED EVENING was a fantastic time for fathers and daughters to spend time together.

I would love to acknowledge the following people:

    • Mrs. Reagan for allowing us such flexible usage of the building and setup times.
    • Mr. Rob for everything, especially putting up with the glitter! (I promise NO glitter next time.) And EVERYTHING else that you do that we don’t even know about.
    • The Georgetown PTC for your support.
    • Angie and Doni for fielding all the parent questions and collecting forms in the office for us.
    • PE teachers for loaning us their hula hoops and orange cones.
    • Thank you to our DJ Greg Rios for his awesomeness! And telling 100+ girls what his name is because I made it a question on the scavenger hunt. Ha!
    • Thanks to our photographer McConomy Photography. We can’t wait to see the pictures.
    • Robyn Smit for 300 delicious, fresh-baked cupcakes.
    • To my co-chair Stacey Alexander for contacting dozens of companies and getting donations for raffle prizes. And for enduring the swarm of girls around the raffle table.
    • A special thanks to our boys Spencer Alexander and his friend CJ for enduring their Tux’s, announcing the girl’s names and pitching in with the games!
    • To Mindy Jeltema for solving the “big” bracelet issue (they’re anklets too!) and being my “go-to” girl! You ROCK!
    • Staci Nieboer for being willing to do anything and everything including clapping for almost 2 hours because the kids couldn’t hear the music for our Musical Thrones game. And for saving your Grandma’s jewelry so we had some fun clip-on earrings for the Dad’s to wear for dress-up.
    • Linda Verburg for being our fruit kabob leader and Hula Hoop helper.  Thanks for hanging in there when I forgot to rotate you to a different game! Oh, and let’s not forget expert duct tape ripper!
    • Jodie Harris for being our popcorn master! You DEFINITELY earned your pay.
    • Melissa Pell who was a trooper picking up and delivering 120 balloons! Thanks for your high heel shoes, too. I hope they are still in tact.
    • My errand girls: Mindy Jeltema, Stacey Alexander, Kathy Everts, and Michelle Walker!
    • Brenda Zuverink for being the photo helper and writing down 172 (my best guess) girls names and of course your Treasury duties and availability.
    • Renee Baar for climbing tall ladders and hanging christmas lights.
    • Cindy and Jamie for welcoming all of our pretty girls to the dance and pouring endless drinks.
    • Our Dad’s Mr. Alexander, Mr. Verburg, Mr. Pell and Mr. Troyer who stuck around and helped cleanup.
    • For food donation or setup: Regina Smith, Shannon Foley, Sara Baker, Julie Reifschneider.
    • To all of the dad’s for making the night fun, wearing high heel shoes, makeup and feather boa’s, and showing us your best air guitar.

    BLOG BITS 2/11/11

    HAPPY FRIDAY GEORGETOWN PARENTS!   heart_clipart_love

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE….. Well we are that much closer to our wonderful winter break!!  Hopefully your students told you about the really cool math assembly that we had here at Georgetown on Thursday.  I think the students really liked this!

We want to inform the parents of Georgetown on how our OUTDOOR recess policy works.  We know that many of you have been watching the weather lately and keeping track of the air and windchill temperatures.  We want you to rest at ease that we do check the air AND windchill temperatures in the morning before school AND at recess times.  We are able to get the ACTUAL temperature and the windchill factor right HERE  at Georgetown.  We have a “Weatherbug” device attached to the school and we log into this and it gives us the temperature and windchill temperature.  The RULE we use here at school is that IF the AIR temperature OR the WINDCHILL is BELOW ZERO we let them in before school and will keep them in at recess time.  Thanks for understanding this policy and remember the students DO NEED to get out and get some fresh air and be able to run around, so therefor, make sure they are prepared for outside recess!  Thank you! : )

KINDERGARTEN INFO……. Kindergarten Round-Up will be held on Tuesday, March 8 at 7pm. Please feel free to click the following links for the k registration and the health appraisal.

You may download this and fill them out and return them to Georgetown or you may stop in the office starting on Monday, January 24 to pick these up. We DO ask however, that when dropping off the filled out registrations that you bring in the child’s original birth certificate.  If we do not receive the birth certificate along with the registration your kindergarten student will not be added to a classlist until we receive the birth certificate.

5th Grade News……. We just wanted to inform you of some important information that was passed along from the Middle Schools.  MARCH 24 our 5th grade students get to visit the Middle School for a tour, they will hear music performances from the 6th grade band/choir/orchestra and they will get to have lunch there.  (Most of the students think this is the BEST part!).  APRIL 12 will be instrument fittings for all 5th graders here at Georgetown in the afternoon.  (All students have the opportunity to try out different instruments to see what might work for them).  APRIL 20 (Baldwin Middle) and APRIL 21 (Riley Middle) will be Parent Informational Meetings at the Middle Schools. The meetings are IDENTICAL so you may attend either meeting.

PTC NEWS…… Just a quick note about one of our families here at school.  Probably most of you have received something through School Messenger or read about this on the Georgetown Blog. The Grooms/DeRouin home caught fire last Friday afternoon.  We are accepting monetary donations for our family here at school and you may send this to school in an envelope marked “Family Donation”.  We will be collecting these in the office until Monday, February 28.

CLASSROOM BASKETS…… We are asking for everyone’s help with this!  This is a great way to help raise money for Georgetown and it is fun for the students also!  Your student’s teacher will be notifying you of the theme they have selected for their classroom basket.  The PTC is asking for the students to make a donation to their classroom basket by FEBRUARY 17. The raffle tickets for these baskets will be on sale during lunch hours and conference times from February 28 through March 2.  The drawing will be held for the baskets on Thursday, March 3.  If you have any questions, or  would be interested in helping to assemble the baskets and or sell raffle tickets, please contact Staci Nieboer at jns92@prodigy.net or at 669-1923.
