Sunday to Monday

Sunday is DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME which means that Monday is NATIONAL NAPPING DAY!

Set your clocks AHEAD on Sunday then pick out your PJ’s to wear to school on Monday.

A wee bit of history on National Napping Day is below.  Warning:  Reading this may make you snoozy.

Boston University (BU) Professor, William Anthony, Ph.D., and his wife, Camille Anthony, presidents of The Napping Company, began this observance in 1999 to showcase the many health benefits of napping.

“We chose this particular Monday because Americans are more ‘nap-ready’ than usual after losing an hour of sleep to daylight savings time,” said William Anthony.

A recent article authored by the Anthonys that was published in Industrial Health, a journal published by the National Institute of Industrial Health in Japan, backed scientific evidence that napping enhances mood and performance. In the article, Anthony says that the benefits of napping are an example of “research generated knowledge” that needs to affect how people live, work and play.

Based on information gathered from thousands of nappers and would-be-nappers, the Anthonys have identified the following eight significant advantages of napping:

1. Napping improves mood – makes you feel better
2. Napping improves performance – makes you more productive
3. Napping is no cost – no expensive clothes or equipment needed
4. Napping is no sweat – no shower needed
5. Napping is self prescribed – no doctor’s orders needed
6. Napping is non-fattening – you cannot eat while napping
7. Napping is a non-invasive procedure – no one does anything to you
8. Napping has no dangerous side effects – unless you are driving

Always Changing: Grade 4 and 5 Health Program

Each spring, we are required to share information with our fourth and fifth grade students regarding changes in human development related to puberty.  These videos go through an extensive in-district review process to make sure the material is appropriate for the developmental age of the students and meet the state standards for our health curriculum.

The videos will be shown on April 3.  The students will be grouped as follows:

  • Fourth & Fifth grade boys will view the video with male teachers, allowing time for Q & A following the viewing.
  • Fourth & Fifth grade girls will view the video female teachers,  allowing time for Q & A following the viewing.

If you would like to preview the videos, please visit the Proctor and Gamble site, sponsors of the curriculum.  At this location, you can examine the curriculum. parent support material and view the girls and boys videos.   As always, our preference is that children feel comfortable talking with their parents about how their bodies are changing – and we encourage them to talk with you regarding questions that cannot be addressed at school.

If you DO NOT want your child to view the video with the grade level gender group, please call or email me. We will make arrangements for supervision for your child in the office during the Always Changing curriculum program.

March is an important month in our elementary school calendar.  It is a time when we welcome new parents to kindergarten for the 2012-13 year and at the same time, prepare 5th graders and their parents for the transition to middle school in 2012-13.

Below is a letter from Dave Powers,  principal at Baldwin Middle school.  This letter is for all parents of 5th graders who will be 6th graders next year.

Whether they have older siblings who have been at BMS before or not, your student will encounter this transition in his or her own unique way, and we aim to make it a positive experience.

We are excited about the transition activities in store for you and have quite a program set up to make both you and your child comfortable with the change that awaits. Welcome New Kindergarteners!

If you have a child who is ready to enter kindergarten (must be five years old by December 1 of 2013), please join us at Kindergarten Round Up on March 6 @ 7 pm in the Georgetown Multi-Purpose Room. This meeting is for parents only. A special open house will be held in late August for the children.

The parent meeting will last approximately 30 minutes. You will receive information about registration and the curriculum program for all day/every day kindergarten (held at Georgetown) and full day/alternate day pre-kindergarten, held at Bauer Elementary.

This is a special video I created with the help of current kindergarteners to help welcome new kindergarteners to school.  Enjoy!

March has come…

March comes in like a lamb!

…in like a lamb and hopefully it will go out like a lamb rather than a lion.   The old proverb or folklore, In like a lamb, out like a lion, was used to describe a normal month of March with cold, damp and unsettled weather patterns.  By the end of the month, spring is typically approaching with  sunshine, greener grasses and early spring blossoms.

Based on the odd winter weather pattern, it will be interesting to see what March brings. What am I hoping for?  Dryer playgrounds and ample sunshine!

Many thanks to all of you who attended conferences last week.  Your support for your children and our school is an essential part of their successful learning—and allows us to do so much more as teachers.  We truly value your support.

As we head into the coming week, know that there are only 14 weeks of school remaining.  Spring break is 25 days away and once this passes by, the final few weeks fly by at the speed of light.

This week, we have PK/K Round UP on MARCH 6….along with JET’S PIZZA NIGHT.  We set our clocks ahead over the coming weekend and open next week with ALL SCHOOL PJ DAY.

A snapshot of the week is below.  Be sure to check your child’s blog for updates that are more specific.
