Want to be a Millionaire?

If you have ever dreamed of being a millionaire, now is your chance.  All students will have the opportunity to become a member of this club if they succeed in reading for 1,000,000 words this school year.  Million Words Back

Million Words Front

As a member of the MILLION WORDs club, each member will have their name on the MILLIONAIRE’s BOARD (display case in our rotunda) and receive a very cool, totally awesome t-shirt.  Each student must keep track of the total words read on this form:  Million word club form.

Completed forms are turned into Mrs. VandenBerg (Librarian), our school librarian.

Links to help you calculate words in books are found on the right under READING COUNTs.  Quick links can be found here:  Ren Learningand   Scholastic e-Catalog.

Week 13: November turns to December

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break!   We will watch the calendar turn over to December this week—which will be hard to believe with the projected temperatures of 50 degrees and rain.

As you look at the calendar below, please note that the Holiday Shop takes place this week.  It will be held in the media center.  This is PTC activity designed to help children purchase gifts for their family members.   The shop is run by volunteers who provide individual attention to children who might need guidance to find the “just right” gift for mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, sister, brother…and others in the family.

This event is one of my favorite activities and I appreciate the PTC’s goal of making this possible year after year.  Georgetown is very fortunate to have a Parent Club that is focused on funding events and activities that promote family based activities throughout the year.

A special reminder to mark your calendar for the December 9 Holiday Program! This will be held at 7 pm at Res Life Church (the facility we rent for this event).

Have a great week!

Thanksgiving Wish

This past week, the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classrooms held a celebration ofBurget Thanksgiving to share gifts, songs and friendship with one another.   The children looked precious in their traditional pilgrim, turkey and feathered hats.

As I watched them exchanged died macaroni necklaces, I was so thankful I found a moment to peak in on their feast and see the joy in their faces.   This smile on Kaylah’s face (along with her fabulous turkey hat) will be something I remember always!

I have said this many times…and you’ll hear me say this again at the holiday program:  Thank you for trusting your children to us each school day.  It is an honor to learn about them–their learning interests, needs and who each one is as a unique, gifted person.

Wishing you safe travels and memorable times during the Thanksgiving break.

Warmly, Mrs. Reagan

Our Specialist’s Blogs

I would like to invite you to visit our art, music and pe teacher’s blogs.  They are filled with great information about the curriculum and instruction that takes place in these very important classrooms.  I included a few highlights to peak your curiosity!

clickersDid you know that PE and technology tools go together?  Read how the PE teachers incorporated the promethean response clickers into their nutrition unit:

PE:  Mrs. Nienhuis and Mrs. VanKoevering

Mrs. Brouwer is so passionate about art that she smells like it (according to a sweet first grader)!  Her blog is absolutely beautiful…and well worth a visit!

Geeky Holiday Gift Ideas

As you prepare for the upcoming gift giving and receiving season, I wanted to pass along some ideas to help you grow your readers and writers…both young (that would be you) and younger!  These ideas come from one of my favorite sites, CHOICE LITERACY, which is an invaluable resource for us at Georgetown.

petethecateA book for all ages with a valuable lesson on adjusting to ‘unpredictableness’ of life is Pete the Cat.  My favorite youtube video shows a precious 4ish girl reading to her younger sister.  There are even adorable Pete the Cat stuffed animals–I have one of these on my Christmas list!

A few more ideas for readers include:  a very cool Book Light and $5 books paired with a stuff animal available through Kohl’s Kids Cause.

If you have a writer in your life, you should consider Autobiography in a Box or the Writers Tool Kit.

Readers who like to construct could build a book clock as a gift for someone they love: Book Clock Project

nookcolorAnd, the ultimate literacy tech gift is an ereader–although they are $$$$ on the gift giving end.  If you have some extra $ and want to bring reading alive in a tech rich way, you may want to consider a NOOK or KINDLE for your favorite reader.  A site to check out if you are comparing the ereaders is edukindle.  An ereader has been on my list for two years…but the budget has a different list of priorities!  If you get one for the holidays, I would love to play with it (under supervision, of course).clock

In preparation for anyone who might accuse me of slighting the math geeks out there, I do have a gift or two for consideration.   Don’t all math geeks need an equation clock?  It’s available through Cafe Press. Another one of my favorite sites, Giftsforageek has one of kind t-shirts like these:

math tshirts

ipadAnd, of course, if you want to be the total geek gift giver, get moving on an ipad which would allow you to read magazines, newspapers and do quadratic equations…all in separate apps! I did read a blog post announcing the availability of ipads at TJ Maxx stores for $399.  My thought:  amazing and interesting Apple or TJ Maxx strategy AND price point if this is true!

Whether you spend $5 or more, enjoy giving a gift that your geek will love!

A very short week ahead…Nov 22 & 23

glass globe with pilgim at thanksgiving harvest animated gifWe will be in school for just two days this coming week due to the Thanksgiving Holiday.    I had hoped to have a scavenger hunt before the holiday, but this one snuck up on me!

Some of the fun links I had plan to share when I kicked off the scavenger hunt are still worthy of posting for your reading (and voting) pleasure.

If you are interested in finding out more about Thanksgiving, the History Channel website is full of resources.   Of course, there is the History of Thanksgiving but also check out the Mayflower Reconstructed.

Visit the  TURKEY FACTS site to brush up on your turkey knowledge.  My favorite fact:  Wild turkey’s sleep in trees at night.

And, speaking of turkeys, take the poll below to let us know if you eat turkey for Thanksgiving dinner or not.    I know one family that eats a traditional dinner of roasted duck and another of homemade pasta and sauce.  This poll doesn’t permit everyone to tell what they eat..but gives us an idea of who eats turkey ….or something else!

Have a wonderful holiday with family and friends…be well!
