A principal who wears…

BRACES?  Yes, you may have heard that I have braces.  Some of the questions I have gotten from the children are quite entertaining!

  1. You have braces?  Why?Braces Day
  2. Adults get braces?  Didn’t you have these already?
  3. Does your mouth hurt?
  4. How long will you have these on?
  5. Why don’t you have colored bands?

My answers have varied depending on the age of the child who asks!  I was one of those lucky people who had fairly straight teeth until some health issues softened my gum tissue — allowing my teeth to move.  Hopefully, my braces will be off by the spring of 2012!

And…YES…my teeth hurt like mad the first five days.  As a matter of fact, the throbbing was so intense that it felt like I had 600 aching teeth in my mouth.  I have great empathy now for all the children in the building who have gotten or will get braces.

And…no colored bands for me.  I would prefer to save this supply for the younger set!   I do have a supply of wax on hand to share with my braced friends.  Thank goodness for the was–it helps me forget about the new brackets and wires. Do I sound like a wimp yet?

Gift Ideas for Your Readers and Writers

lights01

Many of the technology and literacy sites are filled with recommendations for the “best” gifts to purchase for children.  I featured some “geeky gifts” to consider that involve the use of a tech tool two weeks ago.

Another site that I love to check out, GREAT SCHOOLS, featured a list of recommended books and some additional tech tools that were not on my first blog post.   Each time I read up on some of these books and tools, my own lists grows longer!

Holiday Program Details: December 9

GEORGETOWN ELEMENTARY

HOLIDAY PROGRAM

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2010  at 7:00 p.m.

.

It’s time to get your finest wear ready for our annual Holiday Music Program on December 9. This event is organized and arranged by Mrs. Bretz and Mrs. Whitenight, our music teachers.   They have been working with our students since early October to learn music pieces for this holiday celebration.

We  rent Resurrection Life Church for this event. This church is located in Grandville (52nd Ave and Ivanrest). Please enter off from 52nd Ave. After turning in the driveway, turn right at the first fork and follow the signs down to the Worship Center and enter through Door K, which has a large canopy over it.

You may arrive between 6:30 and 6:45 p.m.   The lobby area of  The Worship Center (DOOR K LOCATION) will have signage that identifies the room location for each grade group.  DO NOT drop your child off before 6:30 pm.  This is for safety and security reasons, as there will be no supervision for children before this time.

Students should be in their “meeting room” no later than 6:45 p.m. Once you enter through Door K there will be signs directing you to the drop off rooms as follows:

  • Grades PK, k, 1 and 2 please meet in the CHOIR ROOM
  • Grades 3, 4 and 5 please meet in the CHAPEL ROOM

Parents and students are asked to stay for the entire program.  After each performance, the children will be re-seated to watch the program with their class/teacher.  At the conclusion of the program, Mrs. Reagan will provide directions for child pick up.

Please note that based on rental guidelines with Resurrection Life Church, we must follow these procedures:

  • *The church will be locked during the day of the performance. Doors will be open at 6:30 p.m.
  • * NO FOOD OR DRINK is allowed in the church.
  • *NO ONE IS ALLOWED ON STAGE. The stage is only for staff and students.

The program will be video taped for anyone who is interested in purchasing a DVD of the program. The fee for this DVD will be $15.00 and checks can be made payable to WCET TV. The order form is attached to this newsletter and MUST be turned into the office at Georgetown NO LATER than Monday, December 13.

Please look at the following links and attachments as they are maps to the church, map of the church, and a order form for the Holiday DVD.

RES LIFE Directions.   Remember:  ENTER OFF 52nd Ave.  Follow drive to the right and go to the Worship Center, Door K.

HAPPY FIRST FRIDAY OF DECEMBER!!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE……. What a better way to bring in the month of December….SNOW on the very first day of the month AND the Holiday Gift Shop!  The Holiday Gift Shop went very well and I think we had a lot of happy shoppers. Georgetown would like to extand a HUGE “THANK YOU” to Jamie Ham and all of the parent volunteers who helped to make this Holiday Shop possible! You guys are amazing and we could not do it without all of you!   We really cannot believe this, but we can officially start the countdown to Christmas Break.  As of Monday we only have 10 school days until we are off for two full weeks.  Can you believe this??!!!

STUDENT CALL-INS……. This is just a reminder from Mrs. Nurenberg.  I am just asking a favor of all Georgetown parents!  If your student is sick or  going to be late to school please call in and leave a message on our answering machine.  Even if your child gets ill in the night, you can call and leave the message any time of day or night.  The office has been having to make MANY phone calls on a daily basis to check on students that have not been called in or the teacher is not aware of the student’s absence.  We just want you to know that we are making these calls for the safety of your children.  We want to make sure they are home safe with an adult and something has not happened to them on the way to school.  Thank you for your help with this matter!

CANDY CANE SALES…… Candy Canes will be sold from Monday, December 6th through Thursday, December 16.  The proceeds from these sales will be going to our 5th Grade students for their camp they go to in the spring.  Candy Canes will be sold everyday for $1.  Your child just needs to give their money to their teacher and they will receive their candy cane that very same day.  Thanks for helping to make 5th Grade Camp a very memorable experience!!

HOlIDAY PROGRAM… Will be NEXT THURSDAY, DECEMBER 9, AT 7PM.  It will be held at Resurrection Life Church in Grandville.  Every grade EXCEPT for ECSE will be participating in this Holiday Program.

FOOD SERVICE NEWS…… New Notification System for Lunch Accounts – Starting on January 3, 2011,  any parent that has an email address on file with the Hudsonville Schools PowerSchool system will automatically receive an email notice when their child’s lunch account has a low balance.  The low balance amount is $2.00 for paid children and $.80 for reduced children.  Once your child’s account drops to either of these amounts, you will receive an email letting you know that you need to send in more money.  You will also get a notice when your child’s account has a zero or negative amount. These notifications will be sent out Monday through Friday.  If you do not want to receive these email notifications, you need to contact Stacey Wykoski at swykoski@hpseagles.net by Friday December 31 to have this feature removed from your child’s account.  Please include your child’s first name, last name and grade in the email. Please feel free to contact Stacey at 667-3352 or swykoski@hpseagles.net if you have any questions.

SNOW DAY PROCEDURE FOR HOT LUNCH………With snow just around the corner, the food service program would like to remind parents and students about what will happen if school is closed due to weather. If the district isclosed, the menu that was supposed to be served on the snow
day will be moved to the next school day. An example: if school is canceled on Tuesday due to weather, Tuesday’s menu will be served on Wednesday and the menu that was scheduled for Wednesday will be completely canceled.  Because of our computer lunch account system, there will be no need to issue credits and your student will still be able to order a lunch if they need one. The only exception to this policy is if school is canceled on Friday. In this case, Friday’s menu will be completely canceled and we will continue with the regular menu on Monday. Information on what menu will be served on the day you return will be available on the food service web page at www.jenhudfood.org. Please feel free to contact the food service department at 457-2400 if you have any questions or are unsure of what the menu will be. Thank you! -Stacey L. Wykoski, Food Service Director.

More Than Lip Service

If you read the Grand Rapids Press in paper form or online, you likely noticed the the catchygirl scouts title, MORE THAN LIP SERVICE on the front of the Region Section tonight.  If you missed the title, I know that the photo of Alaina and Happy caught your eye.  And, if you missed that, you have ME in your life to share it with you!

During several weeks this fall, Alaina DuPuys and Happy Bainbridge asked students and staff to donate scented chap sticks for their Girl Scout service project.  This project was tremendously successful with a collection total of 1,300 chap sticks.  Both girls earned their Bronze Badge AND learned some incredible lessons by organizing and executing this project.  The chap sticks were donated to DeVos Children’s Hospital where they are used to scent anesthesia masks for medical procedures and also to coat dry lips of children who have had multiple procedures done to get healthy again.

There are many families and students from our school that have been touched by the incredible nurses and doctors at DeVos Children’s Hospital.  This coming weekend, the hospital will re-open in an entirely new facility–designed to support children and their families even better.  A community open house will be held on December 4 for all those interested in seeing the facility and all it has to offer.

Cell Phone Recycling November 29-December 7

cellDo you have an old cell phone sitting around your house?  If so, we would  love to help you out with recycling this for you.

Jason Orrell, a fourth grader at our school, has set up CELL PHONE RECYCLE BOXES at school.  Jason will be bringing the phones to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.  They receive money for recycling cell phones and this money goes toward helping to find a cure for cystric fibrosis.

And, another perk:  By recycling your old phones, you are doing your part to keep the earth clean and green!
