Week 30: Rain Rain Go Away!

As we head into the week of April 15, the forecast calls for more RAIN and possible snow showers.   We are doing all we can to build in movement breaks and exercise routines to make up for the lack of recess times.  It’s tough on the children to not have time to run and play so we are doing our very best to be creative.

The BMS Parent Night listed below is for future 6th grade students who will be playing an instrument next year.  If your child is NOT playing an instrument, you do not need to attend.

We wrap up the week with POPCORN DAY.  Thank goodness for our PTC and this special treat.  After two weeks of rain, this will be something fun to look forward too!

Have a great weekend!

Welcome Back!

I hope your spring break was FANTASTIC!  We will be easing into the week with a schedule that allows everyone to remember the routines and turn their learning brains back on!

Fifth graders will have a chance to pick out instruments for band/orchestra (more preparation for middle school).

We will also have a JET’S PIZZA NIGHT on Tuesday.  If your child’s class has not won a pizza night yet, this is the week to have pizza for dinner.

Have a great week!

Week 26: March 11-15, 2013

Did you spring ahead one hour?  If not, now’s the time to do it!  Daylight saving time started at 2 a.m. this morning. The down side, we lost an hour of sleep.  The upside, we have an extra hour of light each evening.  If you want to brush up on your daylight savings history, check out theses five quick facts.

The headliner this week is our Scholastic Book Fair, organized by Cheryl Havens and held in the Library.  Many thanks to everyone who is volunteering to help the children select and purchase their books.

Thank you to the PTC volunteers for wrapping up our week with POPCORN DAY.  This is a small event that brings smiles to many faces!

Have a great week!

Final Week of February

I took advantage of the sunshine today with a walk along the dunes at Holland State Park.  The panoramic photo above was taken with my iphone.    Can you spy Milo in the photo?  How about his small white friend, Cooper?  If you have not been to the beach to see it’s winter beauty, I urge you to do that sometime before spring arrives.

The week ahead  will go by fast for students!  It another four day week—teachers will be working on Friday to complete report cards and prepare for conferences, March 4-6.

We will be welcoming 2013-14 kindergartener parents to school during our Round Up meeting on Tuesday at 7 pm.  This meeting is for parents and is informational focused.  The meeting will run from 7-7:30 pm.  I am excited to meet all the new parents and begin preparations for our newest group of students.

Enjoy the sunshine today and tomorrow.  Looks like winter returns on Tuesday!

Week 23: FEBRUARY 18-22, 2013

I want to extend thanks to all the parents who helped to make our Valentine’s Day parties such a tremendous success.    The parents support for all of our activities help to make our school such an incredible place to be.

In addition to Valentine’s Day, we celebrated the 100th day of school.  The kindergarten and first graders honored the day with 100’s day collections and other showcases of SMARTNESS.  After all, after 100 days of school you ARE 100 days smarter.

As we look to the week ahead, we have a MARCO’s night and a fifth grade trip to the SYMPHONY.   We’re also sure to get some more snow, which will make our playground snow creatures happy.

Here’s to a great week ahead!

Week 22: Welcome February!

In a blink of an eye, January is behind us.  February is busy month for holidays and month long celebrations.

Some important dates to note:

  • Feb 1:  Milo turns 1…we’ll celebrate with his visit on February 7.   More about this later in the week.
  • Feb 2:  Ground Hog’s Day and 100th Birthday for Grand Central Station
  • Feb 3:  Superintendent Nick Ceglarek’s 40th birthday (Doesn’t he look too young to be 40?)  If you want to give him a shout out, his email is:  nceglar@hpseagles.net   I know he would love to hear from his favorite audience…children!
  • Feb 12:  Lincoln’s Birthday
  • Feb 14: Valentine’s Day
  • Feb 18:  President’s Day

Month Long Celebrations

Most notable:  Black History Month:  The HISTORY Channel is my favorite go to learn about about and celebrate black history.

And…February is also the month to celebrate international friendship, pet ownership, potatoes, cherries, wild birds and embroidery.  It’s also the shortest month…and before we know it, we will be looking ahead to March.  So make the most of it!

A snap shot of our week is below.  We have a four day week…followed by a four day week!

Week 20: January Wrap Up

Chris Crowley and his beautiful daughter, Ellise.

This Saturday evening, our school Multi-Purpose Room was transformed into a winter wonderland for the PTC sponsored Daddy/Daughter Dance.  The room and surrounding halls were filled with beautiful daughters and handsome, proud dads having fun together dancing, posing for pictures in the photo booth, playing a scavenger hunt and much more.  It was an amazing night made possible by Amy McCormick with support from the PTC board and the many parents who donated items.

All of the PTC events highlighted on the blog are planned by the PTC board and organized by parents — all volunteer time.  The funding comes from your parent donations that are made through our once a year fundraiser, the fall WALK-A-THON.  Thank you this commitment.  The memories made by families at these events are priceless.

Below have posted the agenda for week ahead at Georgetown.  I can’t believe that there are only four days left in the month!  The week ahead is quiet — fourth grade swimming is done (allowing special times to return to normal) and no field trips on the calendar for other classes.

Have a great week…and drive safely if you are out on the roads tonight and tomorrow.

Our 16th Week of School

As a school community, we have had sixteen weeks together to develop relationships as learners and people who care about one another.  It is precisely these relationships that will carry us through the coming week.

Our focus for the week will be as follows:  consistent, predictable routines and activities; continued focus on curriculum learning and instruction; care, time and attention as needed for children who need to be re-assured about safety at school.   We are not planning to run whole class discussions regarding the Sandy Hook event.  Our hope is to address individual questions as we receive them, however we do undertand that during the course of the coming days it is likely that a student will raise a question about safety while we are together whole group.  If this does occur, we have a plan in place for responding appropriately — referencing our own drill practices, our care and concern for all kids, the locked doors in our building and the rarity of events like this.

We urge you to keep your child’s teacher aware of concerns they may have —and be aware that these concerns may appear days, weeks and months from now.  Simply email or call your child’s teacher as necessary.

Please refer to the Thoughts and Resources  post.  This is a collection of resources for you to reference if needed.

As you can see below, we have a special theme day on Wednesday.  Teachers will be wearing their favorite (or not-so-favorite) holiday sweater.  Encourage your child to wear something that reflects the holidays…socks, shirt, hat, etc.

I am thinking of you as you prepare your children for school this week.  Please hold us in your thoughts and prayers as we do our very best to maintain a caring, safe, nurturing learning environment.

Warmly, Mrs. Reagan

Ten School Days and Counting

Nearly every conversation I have with children right now has to do with the count down to vacation and Christmas Day:  “How many days until Christmas?”  This is quickly followed with, “When are we getting snow?”    I can usually answer the first question but the second one has me stumped.

I am wishing for cold and snow so that our playground is transformed from a mud field to a winter play land.  Until the snow arrives, you can entertain yourself with this online snowflake maker.    Maybe if everyone makes an online snowflake, a cold front with move in dropping beautiful snowflakes all over Georgetown.

Our week ahead is posted below.  Throughout the week, students will be shopping in the PTC sponsored holiday shop (library).  We will end the week with POPCORN DAY–another PTC sponsored event and a favorite day for everyone.

Here’s to a great week!
