December Has Arrived

Milo and Cooper on the Holland beach.

While walking along the Lake Michigan shoreline today, I had to remind myself that it was December 2.  The air was heavy with a spring like mist, the water calm and the temperatures in the mid 50’s.   Milo and Cooper spent most of their time chasing sea gulls and digging in the sand.

The high tomorrow is forecasted to be 60 degrees which means we will be finding jackets, mittens and hats scattered about the playground!  Tuesday will be colder — and then milder again by the end of the week.   The unpredictable weather patterns continue — and our lost and found collection is a reflection of this.  Be sure to check for missing sweatshirts, hats, mittens and scarves when you are in the building.  The lost and found tables are outside the library.

A snapshot of some of our events for the coming week is below.  We have Jet’s Pizza night on Tuesday — and other than this a rather uneventful week ahead.  The Secret Santa Holiday Shop will be next week (December 10-13).  This is a great opportunity for your children to buy gifts for family members.  It is my favorite PTC sponsored event of the year!

Many thanks again for all your support for our Holiday Program at FairHaven Ministries on Tuesday of last week. The children and music teachers were amazing and I hope you found the program to be enjoyable and a great kick off to the holidays.  The WCET broadcast times have been expanded.  You can view the time options here.

Have a great week!

Thanksgiving Week 2012

A Favorite Photo from 2011-12 Thanksgiving

During the week ahead, many of us will be spending time with family and friends expressing thanks for food, health, relationships and much more.  This is a holiday rich with individual family traditions as well as many community traditions that have their roots in history of the first harvest celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621.

All of us at Georgetown would like you to know how thankful we are for your support throughout the school year.  Throughout the year, staff repeatedly express their gratitude for:

  • A volunteer group of parents who serve as the governing PTC board to help manage donations to drive family events, support students in need, purchase essential learning tools for classrooms and the library and MUCH MORE.
  • Support staff (recess supervisors, crossing guard, lunch supervisors and kitchen staff, classroom assistants) who make sure our children are safe, feed and can receive enhanced support for learning each day.
  • Parents who volunteer daily in classrooms to assist with reading, writing, math and special projects.
  • All parents who make sure that your children come to school ready to learn, assist with homework and projects after school and so much more.

Thank you for working with us to raise your child educationally and socially.

Wishing everyone a restful and happy Thanksgiving holiday!

Mrs. Reagan and the entire Georgetown Staff

Week 11: November 12-16, 2012

The staff and I want to thank you for attending conferences last week.   We value your support and guidance as we work together for the benefit of your children.

This is the final week for our MINDFUL GIVING PROJECTS.  Donations of non-perishable food items for the WATER of LIFE Pantry and our GLOBAL solar light project.

The photos below are of Miss VanArkel’s class using the Solar Lights during their learning time.  By using the lights, we develop some appreciation for how important these lights are to the teachers and students at Nyaka Primary School in Uganda.  Each class will use the lights in their classroom sometime this week.  #spreadalittlelight

Highlights of our week are posted below.  Have a great week ahead!

May Wraps Up and June Begins: Week 36

It’s the single digit count down:  Only 8.5 days of school remaining.  There is much to be done in the background — classlist work, final assessments, grading and report cards.  In addition, we are growing our staff so we will be adding four teachers and re-allocating spaces.

At the same time, we will be celebrating the remaining days with final projects, picnics, 5th grade celebration (May 30) and a host of other activities featured on your child’s class blog.

Kindergarten Parents:  Remember that the final day of school for MW in June 4.  The final day of school for TTH is June 5.  No kindergarten classes will be held on June 6, 7, and 8.

We will dismiss school at 1 pm on June 8.  As tradition holds, the staff with gather in the bus loop for a big send off of our busses — with the drivers making 2 or 3 rounds through the loop so we can wish all a happy summer.

A snapshot of the remaining days can be found below.  Here’s to a great wrap up of the year with updates to come about Open Library in the summer (TUESDAY MORNINGS) and more.

I hope your Memorial Weekend has been a great introduction to summer fun for your family!

Four Weeks to Go: May 14, 2012

It is our 34th week of school — just four weeks away from summer vacation.  This week is one of my absolute favorites of the year, the celebration of our writers.  We have worked all year long create just right stories to be displayed all over our building: lockers, walls, doors and windows.

Each grade has a designated time for tours…and all of you are invited!  This year, we have integrated art work into our celebration.  You will be astounded by the pieces produced by our third graders with the help of Mrs. Brouwer and their teachers.  Please come to share this celebration with us.  We promise you will be amazed by our writing.

We also have field trips, Marco’s Pizza Night and the PTC Mother/Daughter event this week too!

I would like to extend warm wishes for a happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful care givers of children and all things family.  I hope you have a wonderful day and get celebrated for all you do for those you love.

March has come…

March comes in like a lamb!

…in like a lamb and hopefully it will go out like a lamb rather than a lion.   The old proverb or folklore, In like a lamb, out like a lion, was used to describe a normal month of March with cold, damp and unsettled weather patterns.  By the end of the month, spring is typically approaching with  sunshine, greener grasses and early spring blossoms.

Based on the odd winter weather pattern, it will be interesting to see what March brings. What am I hoping for?  Dryer playgrounds and ample sunshine!

Many thanks to all of you who attended conferences last week.  Your support for your children and our school is an essential part of their successful learning—and allows us to do so much more as teachers.  We truly value your support.

As we head into the coming week, know that there are only 14 weeks of school remaining.  Spring break is 25 days away and once this passes by, the final few weeks fly by at the speed of light.

This week, we have PK/K Round UP on MARCH 6….along with JET’S PIZZA NIGHT.  We set our clocks ahead over the coming weekend and open next week with ALL SCHOOL PJ DAY.

A snapshot of the week is below.  Be sure to check your child’s blog for updates that are more specific.

A Busy Week Ahead!

I hope you had a great snow day!   Thank you to everyone who sent photos to share on the blog.  The day was as an unexpected surprise for many—and the teachers considered an bonus day for finishing up report cards and preparations for conferences.

Throughout this week, we will be hosting our PTC COIN WAR.  This is our final and very important fundraiser for PTC.  The money collected will build the PTC budget for critical school events that are focused on supporting family activities and learning.  Please send in your silver coins so that the PTC can continue all the good that it does for our school community!

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. I will have the esteemed role of TIME KEEPER which means you will hear my voice every 15 over the intercom announcing the end of each conference period.

We also have LEAP DAY on February 29...a special day that appears just once every four years.  If you know anyone who has a birthday on this special day, make sure you remember them with a special birthday wish!

On the first day of March,  we will have our DRESS LIKE A PE TEACHER theme day. Every staff member and student is encouraged to wear PE apparel and dress as a PE teacher.  It’s our way of celebrating Mrs. Neinhuis and Mrs. VanKoevering…two incredible PE teachers who make a big impact on our health and wellness at Georgetown.

Remember:  NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY.  Teachers will be working hard on professional development activities….learning strategies for improving instruction for all learners.

Have a great weekend!

Week 23: February 20-24, 2012

I hope your winter (slash that) mini-SPRING break was fantastic!  Teachers were very busy on Thursday working on assessments and report cards.  I am hopeful that everyone was able to use the extra day or two for rest and fun–which is well deserved all around.

I must admit, as far as the weather is concerned, I have crossed over from mourning the lack of snow to hoping we can push this weather through March and straight into spring.

This is our last full week of February — welcoming March in next week. The schedule below is a snapshot view.  Be sure to check out your child’s class blog for additional details.
