Community Forum: Bond Proposal

Over the past several years the number of students attending Hudsonville Public Schools has grown significantly.  During the past eighteen months we have been exploring options to address this growth.  Following a lengthy process of study and community input, the Board of Education unanimously approved a bond proposal to bring to the voters.  While this request does not raise the millage rate, it is a comprehensive approach to addressing the needs of our growing K-12 student population.

Please join us for a community gathering to review this proposal that will go before the voters on May 3, 2011.

Location: Hudsonville High School Auditorium (5037 32nd Avenue)

Dates: Tuesday, April 19

Time: 7:00 p.m.

Week 30: April 18-22, 2011

We welcomed everyone back from spring break this week!   It is wonderful to have all the children back at school….even if a few of them were longing for the sunshine they left behind (students and staff)!

I was greeting many of the students in the rotunda on Monday morning, when a pair of third grade girls, with their arms impossibly intertwined, approached me with huge smiles on their faces.  “I am so glad you are back because it was so quiet last week without you here!”  I said.  One of them chimed up with, “Mrs. Reagan, we only have 44 days of school left.”  My reply, given with a look of concern,   “Don’t tell me that.  I am sad when this building isn’t filled your happy faces and the sound of learning.”  Both of them paused and the other answered, “Oh don’t worry, Mrs. Reagan.  We’ll be back for fourth grade.”  And, of course, they smiled reassuringly, turned and skipped off down the hall to their classroom.

And I was reminded again why I love my life at Georgetown so much.  I can’t imagine a day without moments of authentic interaction with children each day….small and large.  I am always sad to have the school year wrap up.

As we looked to the few weeks ahead, know that they will go by quickly — with many important events taking place.  A snapshot of this week is below.  I included a preview to the following week, noting the April 26 ART SHOW at Park Elementary.  If your child has a piece in the show, our school open house is on Tuesday, April 26.  Also, in addition to the dates shown below, please remember to check your child’s class blog for additional events that will be taking palce.

I hope you are enjoying the weekend….and ignoring the snow that is falling from the sky!

Here’s to a great week ahead.

Mrs. Q and Second Graders Walked for Water

Mrs. Quigley’s along with Joey from her class and  Jackie from Mrs. Kuieck’s class walked  for water today!  They walked  2.4 miles to get water it back to to the filters at Huizenga Park.   Why would they do this?  To develop an understanding and appreciation for people in countries like Rwanda where the average person walks 3.7 miles to get water with ‘Jerry Cans’ for the day.  Joey, Jackie and Mrs. Q tried carrying these jerry cans –and found it very hard.  They had to work together to carry one can!

They learned that in Rwanda, a child dies every 20 seconds due to water born illnesses.  TThe money that was raised today from their today walk will be used by two organizations to build water filters for many families in Rwanda.

grown by 604 students. This trend is not new to Hudsonville as our enrollment has almost tripled over the last 25 years.  In an effort to address the need for additional classroom space, our Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution to go before voters with a bond request. •New competition pool and fine arts auditorium

Welcome Back!

I hope that you had a fun, relaxing and “just right” spring break.  Nearly 70 families completed the “WHERE WILL YOU BE DURING SPRING BREAK?” survey.  As you can see from the bar graph below, I was not the only person remaining in West Michigan!

springbreak

This week we enter our 29th week of school.   It’s hard to believe this next statement:  We have just 9 weeks of school remaining!

We will be very busy in the next few weeks learning, teaching, preparing for JUST WRITE, visitors from RAEY GUANG ELEMENTARY, student teacher’s from Liverpool, England and MUCH MORE!  Watch the blog for details regarding all of these events.

I will be working closely with teachers to prepare class lists for next year. We would like your input and ask all parents to complete a Class Placement Survey for each child attending Georgetown.  As of today, 220 parents have completed the survey.  This needs to be completed by May 1 of this year.

Here’s to a great week ahead!

Sister School to Visit May 4-6!

Penpal Collage FINAL

The government of Taiwan has approved for our sister school, Raey Guang Elementary to visit us for a second year in a row.  In early February, I sent out a survey to families to identify interested Georgetown penpals and host families.  Since then, I have been busy communicating with the staff in Raey Guang to make perfect matches with our students and theirs.  During spring break, I received photos of our penpals which you can see above!

On May 4, a group of 6 staff members and 18 students will arrive to learn about the American culture and traditions and our education system.  The Raey Guang students will be matched with Georgetown students to shadow during the school day and then travel home with them for “home-life/family experiences”.  We will hold a special welcome ceremony on May 5 at 9:15 in our MPR.

Our sister school will depart on the morning of May 6 for Pingtung, Taiwan.  Throughout the experience, we will take photos and share these with you via this site.

A blog post from June 2010 details the first visit with our sister school. It was incredible in every way—and we look forward to much greater learning and sharing this year.
