March Robins…Brrrrrrr!

Mrs. Brouwer and her fifth grade class spotted a flock of 20 robins searching for worms on our 4/5 playground this week.  As we brace for a bitterly cold week, these robins are here to remind us that spring will come!

Another sign of spring:  Our 5th graders travel to Baldwin Middle School to tour the building as future 6th graders.   Some of these students (18) have been with us for seven years and the majority of them six year.  I have learned that even for those who I have known for a shorter time period, it is exciting and sad to see them mature into the next stage of their educational career.

We are fortunate to have our 5th graders move onto one of our outstanding middle schools.  Both of our middle school staffs, Riley and Baldwin, prepare well for our students in terms of courses, climate and culture.   I am truly excited for all our students…they are ready!

Have a great week – and stay warm!

Mr. Gort: Math Video Tutorials

Does your child’s math homework ever stump you?  Do you find yourself wondering how you passed math courses way back when if you can’t figureo out how to help your elementary child complete a math problem?

Can I tell you this?  As a parent, I UNDERSTAND!  Math is not what it used to be.  It is much more complex for elementary learners now than it was when we were in school.

To help support parents and our math learners, Mr. Gort is video taping lessons and posting these on his MATH BLOG.  Currently he has two videos posted:  Tips for long division and tips for finding area and perimeter.  Mr. Gort is a resource teacher at our school and teams with Mrs. Reifschneider, who is also a resource teacher.

If you have requests for certain math concepts that you would like him to video tape, please let him know by completing this survey.   Our goal is to create a video library that you can access at any time to provide support to your child and also prevent you from ripping your hair out!

Robo’s Great Adventures

Do you know someone at Georgetown who might title their autobiography, “ROBO’S GREATEST ADVENTURES?”  This same person loves the sound of the piano and if given a chance to learn a new skill would love to learn how to play the piano.

Do you know who this person is yet?  Let me give you a few more clues:  Favorite color is GRAY.  When this person was a child, favorite food of choice:  MAC AND CHEESE.

Who is this person?  Do you know?

Mr. Rob, Our incredible wonderful fabulous…and oh so shy custodian!

Visit all of our school blogs to learn about staff members.  You will be given clues to each person.  See if these clues help you to identify each staff member.

You can visit these blogs by clicking on classrooms to the left.

If you don’t see the post on the main page, type the words “mystery teacher” into the search tab.

Have fun!

My final post…

as the most fortunate principal in the entire world!  As I shared with you in early April, I am retiring this week after 32 years in education, the final fourteen years at Georgetown.  And, it goes without saying (but I will say it loudly and proudly), these final 14 have been my favorite…. the sweetest spot of my career.

Thank you for EVERYTHING you have done over the years to raise me to be a better person, educator and leader.  I have relied on the children to guide me and show me how to listen and learn—they are the best teachers.  They were the teachers who would use more than words to say:  “STOP  Mrs. Reagan.  Please listen to me and take care of me.”

When they children weren’t teaching me, it was the staff.  I need to you to believe me: Your children are working with the most gifted and caring administrative assistants, Mr. Rob (SUPER CUSTODIAN), teachers, social worker, speech therapist, school psychologist, para professionals on this planet.   They put the children first, always…and then take care of one another.  When they weren’t taking care of the children, they were teaching me to listen to their needs — and to slow down, stop sending so many emails, stop creating so many documents, etc.

*Image taken from one of my favorite books: The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse By Charlie Makesy

I have many mixed emotions today as I say farewell…and that is what I have always wanted when it was time to move in a new direction.  I love this school, the children, the staff, the families and the community.  It’s hard to leave such a wonderful place with exceptional people.

I know that next year will bring some unique challenges for this team — and your families.   This staff has a great sense of how to care and educate — and a new imaginative leader will take this school to new heights.

I want to close with endless appreciation to you for your patience and grace over the years…and the trust you have given me to help grow your children.  I am forever grateful.

Sending you wishes for GOOD HEALTH and lots of fun summer adventures!

Air Hugs and Chicken Wing Bumps,

Mrs. Reagan

PS… The parade with the messages from you were the closure that Mrs. Burdis (retiring grade 3 teacher who I admire and adore) and I both needed.  Thank you ❤️

Happy Sunny Wednesday!

You guys…look who took over my office~!  MR. ROB!

He is the only person who can get into Georgetown right now….and that’s because he is checking on the grass length and he is making sure NO DUST is settling on inside.  He likes his grass cut short and ZERO dust on furniture or floors!

MR. ROB IS THE BEST!

Enjoy his read aloud from my office below!

CONNECTIONS: Week 29 aka Week 2

The past week has taught us this:  STAYING CONNECTED is IMPORTANT!

I am writing this week’s update from all the Georgetown staff.  Collectively, we want you to know how much we miss you.  We miss the routine and we miss being together.  We also miss each other — it’s been more than a week since we have seen each other as staff members at school.  It’s supposed to be week 29 of school … but instead it’s Week 2 of COVID19 Homeschool.

We, the staff,  are learning ways to connect with one another and ways to connect with you.  As learners, we are embracing mindset growth opportunity.  I have learned about ZOOM and LOOM for meetings & recording lessons, FLIPGRID for student/teacher sharing, YOUTUBE for posting read alouds and more.  We’ve been fully immersed in the world of online tutorials, experimenting with one another and seeking peer review!

Whenever I get an alert that a video has been posted to flipgrid, I stop whatever I am doing and take in the 90 seconds of connecting with Georgetown family.   Thank you for posting these and helping us all feel connected! This week, we are going to share a JOKE on the school flipgrid.  We need to bring on the giggles.  More below.

Mrs. Bretz (music) and Mrs. Nienhuis/Mrs. VanKoevering (PE) have posted activities to help you stay connected with music and movement.  Mrs. Bretz also has a flipgrid recorder practice coming soon (sorry parents : /).

Please check the teacher blogs for lots of great links. Mrs Greenlund’s Blog has a special feature on VIRTUAL FIELD TRIPS.

Another great resource:  GEORGETOWN READ ALOUDS ON YOUTUBE!

  • Kindergarten Teachers
  • Georgetown Read Alouds:  Check this site for read alouds by Mrs. R, Miss M, Mr. Rob, Mrs. Koon, Charles (a 1st Grader), Mrs. Speidel, Mrs. Reagan and more. If you want to read a book aloud, send the video to me or your teacher and we’ll upload it to this site!  I have also added more links to read alouds in our LINK menu to the left.  It is a link category titled:  Connecting during COVID19.

Okay..for this week, let’s SHARE A JOKE!  Directions are below.  As we close, we (all of us at Georgetown) want to thank you for staying home and preventing the spread of the virus!  In the meantime, let’s learn how to appreciate the simple things in life and connect in new ways!

GOOD MORNING SUNSHINES!

I am trying to figure out what my new normal is … being a principal from home.  I am also trying to figure out how to be AT HOME ALL THE TIME.  If you read my Sunday post, you know that I am self-quarantining with my husband, Tony, who has cancer.  We are doing all we can to make sure that we stay healthy.

You won’t be surprised to hear that the very first thing I did was make a schedule…for me and Tony to follow.  He was a bit surprised to hear this …but I told him WE HAVE TO HAVE A ROUTINE.  It looks boring compared to yours — but it works right now.

Sitting and working on school stuff has been interesting because I have two dogs, Otis (I call him Otis Potis Pie) and Milo (also called Milo Jilo).  And guess what, they do not want me on my laptop.  They want me to PLAY with them….and I am glad about that.  I love puppies as much as I love kids!  They let me know when I have been on my laptop too long by nudging their noses over the keyboard.

I am also trying to figure out how to connect with our amazing teachers and parapros and Mr. Rob and Mrs. Hoekstra and Mrs. Jeltema.  AND…most importantly all my favorite Georgetown kids.

I want to learn more about where you are doing your learning and if you have a pet.  I made a FLIPGRID with a invite video for you to share with me.  Everyone will be able to watch it.  If it goes well, I will do another FLIPGRID in a few days.

Here’s how you do it:

  • Go to this link.
  • You will be asked to enter your school email.  It is your username + hpsstudents.net.
  • You will also be asked to enter a code and it is this:  22faf4f1

Watch my video and then film your own.  You have 90 seconds to take your video.  Excited to see what you create.  Also…if you can’t figure your school username, just email me:  treagan@hpseagles.net

Also, if you wrote a letter to one of our critical people who are taking care of us in the grocery stores, hospitals, doctor’s offices or our first responders, make a video reading it and I will put these together to send to all these people.  Also…mail it.  They need our thank you’s right now.

Okay…that’s it for now!  MISS YOU LIKE CRAZY!

Mrs. Reagan
