A Principal Who…Twitters?

Yes. You have a principal who twitters. If you are anything like my family, right now your eyebrows are raised and you are calling up visions of the latest and endless news coverage of who twitters & tweets — and how this latest craze in social messaging is redefining instant communication across the globe.

I have taken a great deal of “endearing” harassment from my husband and close friends for my twitter habits.  Before I can defend myself and explain that I AM NOT FOLLOWING Ashton Kutcher or Demi Moore (although they may be following me) NOR am I checking the most recent tweets about Michael Jackson (even though I did have a nice collection of Jackson 45’s) — my family is cracking themselves up with tweet, twitter, and twits-phere jokes.

So, why do I endure this teasing and continue to twitter you ask?  OR better yet you may be asking: WHY DO YOU TWITTER and WHAT IN THE WORLD DO YOU GET OUT OF IT?  For a professional explanation of twitter, check out Twitter in Plain English.  To understand why I twitter, read on:

1.  Twitter has become the most powerful tool for me to grow my professional learning network (PLN).  I am connected with principals, technology specialists, phenomenal classroom teachers, parents, media specialists and educational web designers from all walks of life—and on all sides of the world.

2.  Since joining twitter in November of 2008, I have learned more about how to support students, parents and teachers with technology EVER.  This is an important learning curve for me to explore and live because technology (whether I or we like it or not) is changing the way we think, learn, process, teach, problem solve, support, communicate and share with others.  Here is a picture of just a few of my twitter friends who help me learn how to be a better teacher with technology as a learning tool:

3.  Our students – YOUR CHILDREN – are racing ahead of us on this curve.  In order for educators and parents to be able to learn with them and improve our best practice instruction for them, I must (we must) explore all areas of the web and ask important questions about how to determine primary sources, sort through fact from fiction, and determine appropriate boundaries for sharing personal information.

4.  Finally, I have developed some great contacts for professional learning through twitter!  I have become attached to my network of followers.  How?  Why?  Each time I tweet a question about a tech problem I am experiencing or the need for a link to an application, my network comes through in a matter of hours or even minutes!  I do my best to share and support them by sharing my links and resources without developing, as my family claims, and addiction to twitter.  One of my principal twitter colleagues, Mrs. Melinda Miller, recently blogged about her need to twitter referencing a quiz to determine if an individual is twitter addicted.  If I am ever in need a 12 step twitter program, I know who to tweet!

You are welcome to follow me (tee62) on twitter.  I can assure you that most of my tweets (like facebook) are simple, boring and typically interesting only to those who are in education or have children of their own.   When you check out my followers, you will see that our new superintendent, Mr. Nick Ceglarek, is also a twitter.  If you are interested in learning more about twitter, please visit the Georgetown Wiki — a collection of resources I have created for the staff, one page devoted to twitter resources.  (You feel a post about wiki ‘ing coming, don’t you?)

In closing, I can assure you that I will never ask you with a sarcastic tone, “So…how are Ashton and Demi doing these days?”

Volunteers…We Thank You!

To All of Our Incredible, Wonderful, Invaluable Volunteers:

We, the entire Georgetown staff, want you to know that you are an essential part of our learning community.  Without you, we would not be able to…

• celebrate and honor our student artists with displays of their craft throughout the year.
• reach the ability levels of learners in reading, writing and math (Reading Counts, Baggie Books, Web  Reading, Project Learning and much more!)

• acknowledge birthdays each month  in the rotunda.

• safely offer field trips to varied destinations at each grade.

• support our learners in need of ole models for problem solving and decision making  (Kid’s Hope, Buddy Reading, Recess Games).

• offer parent/child activities that are safe, fun and full of memories.

And the list of student support goes on and on.  You help us with “behind the scenes” support of teaching and learning by running copies, stapling books, sorting projects and hanging posters — and much more!

We, the staff of Georgetown, believe that because of your support our students are better prepared to learn and we are then able to do more to reach tthe varied social, emotional and academic needs of all our students.

Our deepest thanks to each and everyone of you for the time you give to us and all the students at Georgetown!

You are invited to a VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION performance  at our Talent Shows on May 14, 2009 (10 am and repeated at 2 pm).  If you are unable to make this performance, you will be able to view this on our blog!

Many thanks, Mrs. Reagan and the entire Georgetown Staff!

Locker Clean Out Day!

Mr. Rob, the very best custodian in the world, has asked that we clean out our lockers on Friday, January 23. The winter clothing is overflowing from the lockers, and I am sure that there are many pairs of mittens, gloves — as well as numerous scarves, hats, and sweatshirts residing in some children’s lockers.

We will also have all the lost and found spread neatly on two tables in the rotunda. As students walk through the halls on Friday, they will have the opportunity to look for missing items to bring home.

If you know that your child is missing an article of clothing, please encourage him/her to look during locker clean out day, January 23, 2009!

Wintery Photo of Georgetown

I thought I would update the photo of our school on the front page of our blog.  This will help our friends in P’ing Tung, Taiwan to visualize our snowy weather.  If you peak at the weather in Taiwan right now (see upper right tab at the top of this page), you will see that our sister school lies in the Tropic of Cancer–which means it does not snow there!

Another reason for updating the picture is that the spring like picture was driving our trepid and fastidious custodian, Mr. Rob, CRAZY!   He did not like the fact that I posted a photo in which the lawn was not mowed.   Oh how we love Mr. Rob and the great pride he takes in keeping our building clean, tidy and just right for all of us.  He is one of a kind.  Thank you, Mr. Rob, for all you do!

Holiday Program Details

Now that the Thanksgiving holiday is behind us, we have officially entered the holiday season!  Our school will be kicking this off with our annual Holiday Music Program on December 4, 2008.  This program is organized and arranged by Mrs. Bretz, our music teacher.  She has been working with our students since early October to learn music pieces for this holiday celebration.  We are renting Resurrection Life Church for this event.  This church is located in Grandville (52nd Ave. and Ivanrest).  Please enter off from 52nd Ave and enter through Door K.  There is only one performance this year!    Directions to the church:  RES LIFE

Students can be dropped off for the performance NO EARLIER than 6:30 pm.  We ask this for safety and security reasons.  There will not be supervision for children prior to 6:30, so it is critical that you follow these guidelines.  Once you enter through Door K, there will be signs directing you to the correct room.

Grades 1,2 and 3 will be in the Choir Room.  Grades PK, K, 4 & 5 will be in the Chapel Room.

Because the church has adequate seating for everyone, the children will be able to watch the performance from reserved seating!  At the end of the event, they will be dismissed to their classrooms for parent pick up.

Please note that based on rental guidelines with Resurrection Life Church, we have been asked as a school community to follow these procedures outlined below.  There were some facility use problems during our program last year, and I would like to outline the expectations so that all families are aware of the rental terms:

•The program will be video taped for all families.  A DVD of this program will be available to families one week following the program.  The fee for this DVD is $5.00.  Order form:  holiday-dvd

•NO FOOD OR DRINK is allowed in the church.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the performance!  If you would l like to read Mrs. Bretz’s answers to commonly asked questions, visit this link:  Q & A Holiday Program

Wintery Weather Has Arrived!

The snow has arrived…and so has the cold!   Please do your very best to make sure that your child has mittens or gloves, hats and other winter clothing to help with warmth during recess periods.

Also, I want to let you know that our sidewalks have many icy spots on days like today.  Mr. Rob (our intrepid custodian) sands and salts all areas beginning each day at 6:30 am.  However, the wind (which is very gusty in our open parking lot) works against this process.  The salt and sand blows, and what has melted refreezes.

Keep this in mind throughout the winter months.  Tread carefully on the sidewalks and know that Mr. Rob does his very best to make it safe.

Be extra careful when walking outside as it is the time of year again,  Icy spots everywhere, I know that I have spoken to Rob and it is really difficult to keep the ice down, as the wind blows through it re-freezes quickly so warn your students to be extra cautious too.
