A COUPLE OF TIDBITS FROM THE OFFICE

FIRST ITEM: SNOW DAY PROCEDURE FOR HOT LUNCH
With snow just around the corner, the food service program
would like to remind parents and students about what will
happen if school is closed due to weather. If the district is
closed, the menu that was supposed to be served on the snow
day will be moved to the next school day. An example: if
school is canceled on Tuesday due to weather, Tuesday’s
menu will be served on Wednesday and the menu that was
scheduled for Wednesday will be completely canceled.
Because of our computer lunch account system, there will be
no need to issue credits and your student will still be able to
order a lunch if they need one. The only exception to this
policy is if school is canceled on Friday. In this case, Friday’s
menu will be completely canceled and we will continue with
the regular menu on Monday. Information on what menu will
be served on the day you return will be available on the food
service web page at www.jenhudfood.org. Please feel free to
contact the food service department at 457-2400 if you have
any questions or are unsure of what the menu will be. Thank
you! -Stacey L. Wykoski, Food Service Director

SECOND ITEM:

Just a friendly reminder from the office……..  PLEASE remember to send a note in the morning to your child’s teacher if you will be picking them up at the end of the day. The office is very busy towards the end of the day and it can be very hard to contact the teachers about end of the day changes due to the students being at specials and the teachers getting ready for the buses.  Thankk you for your consideration in this matter!

Have a great day!

Week 23: February 22-26

We are very excited to wrap up the final week of February with cool to cold, dry weather.  And…we are ready to deal with the cool to cold temperatures because we have HEAT again!

close upThe end of the month is a time for students to show their progress in the areas of reading, writing, spelling, math, science and social studies.  This information is recorded on the report cards shared during conferences March 7-9.  In addition to academic progress, teachers will be noting growth in social/emotional and behavioral skills — noted in the life skills section of the report card.  *If you are unsure of your conference time, contact your child’s teacher.

In addition to spring conference/report card preparations, we are busy behind the scenes preparing for our PK/K class of 2016-17.  We kick off enrollment for PK/K on March 1 at 7 pm.  If you have a neighbor or friend with a child who will be 5 in the fall of 2016, pass along information about PK/K Round Up.

I hope you were able to enjoy the sunshine on Saturday and the mild day today.  I loved hearing the spring birds sing while I walked through my neighborhood wearing a spring coat…and no boots!

Here’s to a great week!

March has come…

March comes in like a lamb!

…in like a lamb and hopefully it will go out like a lamb rather than a lion.   The old proverb or folklore, In like a lamb, out like a lion, was used to describe a normal month of March with cold, damp and unsettled weather patterns.  By the end of the month, spring is typically approaching with  sunshine, greener grasses and early spring blossoms.

Based on the odd winter weather pattern, it will be interesting to see what March brings. What am I hoping for?  Dryer playgrounds and ample sunshine!

Many thanks to all of you who attended conferences last week.  Your support for your children and our school is an essential part of their successful learning—and allows us to do so much more as teachers.  We truly value your support.

As we head into the coming week, know that there are only 14 weeks of school remaining.  Spring break is 25 days away and once this passes by, the final few weeks fly by at the speed of light.

This week, we have PK/K Round UP on MARCH 6….along with JET’S PIZZA NIGHT.  We set our clocks ahead over the coming weekend and open next week with ALL SCHOOL PJ DAY.

A snapshot of the week is below.  Be sure to check your child’s blog for updates that are more specific.

Thinking Ahead to PK/K 2012-13

I am excited to announce that beginning with the 2012/13 school year, HPS will offer the following programing options for students all upcoming PK/K children (those who turn five prior to December 1):
  • K:  Full day/every day kindergarten in ALL elementary buildings.  All parent K placement requests will be honored.  No screening will be necessary.
  • PK:  Full day, every other day pre-kindergarten (PK) will be housed at Bauer. Georgetown will not house PK–our section of PK will be held at Bauer Elementary.  Georgetown PK students will be bussed from their homes to Bauer during their PK year.  The following year, these PK children will return to Georgetown for their K year.
  •  PK placements requests will be honored based on section availability. Screening will not be necessary.  If sections fill up, preference will be given to students with birthdays between September 1-December 1.If you are undecided about the best placement for your child (PK or K), a screening can be scheduled for a placement recommendation.
  • JANUARY 31, 2012:  Registration packets will be available for pick up in elementary buildings and at the administration building.  Parents will be asked to specify their placement preference on the registration form.
  • March 6, 2012 @ 7 pm:  PK/K Round Up at Georgetown.  This is an evening meeting designed to help parents understand programming options and a time to turn in PK/K registration paperwork.
  • May 31, 2012:  All parents will know their child’s PK/K placement by this date.

If you cannot attend this meeting, simply stop by our school office to pick up the packet of information shared at Round Up as well as all of the registration information.

The Week Ahead-March 8, 2010

The second week in March brings PK/K Round Up, field trips for select classrooms and more mild weather!   The mild weather means many things to a school staff, including but not limited to the following:

  • Joy
  • Decrease in winter viruses
  • Increase in lost and found items

Our lost and found is overflowing with LOST items, and the onset of mild weather will mean that it will grow as students wear their jackets/sweatshirts outside for recess…and then peel them off while playing.   We will be donating left over winter items to a local agency the first week of April.  Please make sure you have your child check for any missing items before spring break arrives.

Finally, our annual talent show will be held on the Thursday before spring break!  If you have a 3rd-5th grader who is interested in participating, check out the GOT TALENT post.

Here’s a snap shot of the week ahead!

BLOG

History

As a community of teachers and learners, our school wide mission is BE NICE • WORK HARD • LEARN WELL.

Our school was built in 2006 and was designed for maximum learning use focused on comfort and a “green living” philosophy.  We have committed to a environmentally friendly approach by utilizing blogs to reduce paper use and hosting a Paper Gator recycling bin for our school and community.

We work with over 550 students each day, teaching grades K-5.

Over 30 teachers work in our building on a daily basis, and 90% of them have their master’s degree in education.  We work actively as a team to provide the most progressive learning experiences for all children in our school.  Your children are the central focus of all that we do as a team.

We have developed a School Improvement Plan that is on file with the Michigan Department of Education.  You can view it here:  GES School Imp Plan

HEALTH & SAFETY  INITIATIVES

MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL
In order for your child to take any medication (prescription and non-prescription) at school,
a MEDICATION FORM is required. If your child requires prescription medication (asthma inhaler, epi-pen, insulin) your physician must complete a portion of the form.  The medication form is available in the school office.

POP FREE SCHOOL
Georgetown staff is focused on promoting healthy living initiatives.   One important initiative is a “POP FREE     LUNCHROOM and POP FREE CLASSROOMS.”   Please keep this in mind when you provide a  lunch for your child at school.

NUT AND MILK ALLERGY SAFETY
As a staff, we take food allergies very seriously and do all that we can to create a safe environment at school.  There is a nut free lunch room table and milk free lunch room table in the cafeteria.  Students who need to sit at these tables can have friends join them with permission.  A lunch assistant will check lunches to be sure that those who join the table have nut or milk free lunches for that day.  Our number one goal is to make the lunchroom safe for ALL students who are eating.   In addition to this, certain classrooms are NUT FREE and these rooms will be marked accordingly.   If your child is in one of these classrooms, we ask that you not send any snack related food to school that contains nuts.  Furthermore, if your child has a food allergy that we are not aware of, please let your child’s teacher know as soon as possible. We appreciate everyone’s support in this area.

HEELY POLICY
Due to the safety issues related to Heely shoes (shoes with wheels), these are NOT ALLOWED at school—both in the building and on the playground.  Please keep this in mind as you are outfitting your child with shoes for the school year.  If your child wears Heely’s to school, the staff will ask that the wheels be removed and placed in the backpack.

STUDENT DROP OFF AND PICK UP
This is a very busy time in the school drive and hallways.  To make it more efficient and secure, we have this policy in place:

1.  CHILD DROP OFF
If you are dropping your child off at school, please do this in the front circle drive.  Your child will then walk outside the building to his/her playground until the bell rings at 8:45 am.   If your child arrives after school begins, you must walk him/her into the front office and sign your child in for the day.  Our school secretaries, will have a sign-in log available at the front desk.  Your child will then walk to his/her classroom.

2.  CHILD PICK UP
For those of you who pick your child up after school, please report to the front lobby.  If your child normally rides the bus, SEND A NOTE ADDRESSED TO THE TEACHER indicating that you will be providing pick up.  Wait in the front lobby, and the classroom teachers will send children to this area for pick up.  PLEASE DO NOT GO TO THE CLASSROOMS.

It is important that we keep our hallways open at the end of the day so that we can exit the building efficiently and calmly.  For this reason, you must wait in the lobby area for your child.  The PreK and K teachers will have assistants to walk students to the office for pick up.   If you need to meet with your child’s teacher for any reason, wait for the students to exit the building before you walk to the classroom.

ALL STUDENTS MUST BE PICKED UP PROMPTLY AT 3:40 WHEN SCHOOL ENDS. Thank you for your help in this matter!
