Good Last Friday afternoon of February!!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE

CONFERENCES….. Parents  don’t forget that we have parent/teacher conferences next week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.  You should have received a notice from your student’s  teacher as to your date and time.  If you have any questions in regards to your time or date please contact your child’s teacher.

PARENT DROP-OFF…. when dropping your children off in the morning before school in the circle drive they need to be instructed to walk around the building to their individual playground.  We are having too many students entering the building through the front doors and then are not going outside to  their playground.  We just cannot have students lingering in the building before school.  We do have supervision outside for the students and they let the students in when it is time.  If you are dropping off after the 1st bell (8:40am) has sounded then the children may enter through the front of the building.  (Just a reminder if it is raining or the wind chill is below zero we do allow the students to enter the building.)

CLASSROOM BASKET RAFFLE…. this will be taking place again this year during conferences next week.  These will be out for display and you may purchase tickets for $1/ticket.  Tickets will be available for student’s to purchase also during their lunch time.  The winners of the baskets will be announced the following week and the proceeds from this fundraiser will be donated back to your child’s classroom.

MOTHER/DAUGHTER POTTERY…..  this will be available to pick up during conferences next week.  The PTC will have it set up on tables for you to just swing in and pick up.  Thanks for being patient!

SPRING BOOK FAIR….  Our spring book fair will take place from March 15-19.  This will be held this time in our Sensory Motor Room. Family Shopping Night will be held on Tuesday, March 16.  Please feel free to visit our Scholastic Home Page for book reviews, etc. at http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/georgetownelementary.

Pillow Polo: Who are the Champions?

spinning studentIt was an exciting game of Staff vs 5th Graders Pillow Polo Game on Friday.  The staff team is a year older and the 5th graders…still 10 and 11.   This year we managed to recruit Mr. Rob as our goalie, knowing that strategy will need to start giving us an edge against these agile, fast and competitive teams!

It was a close game with some accusations that the staff members were cheating.  Remember when I referenced the word strategy up above? As a disclaimer, I would all to be aware of the “baby rule” which states “…if at anytime, the ball  goes into play near a child under four, the principal must pick up the ball, walk 10 feet and throw the ball toward her team’s goal.” You can find this on page 6,539 in the manual held in the Library of Congress Soccer Section.

Thanks for a fun game 5th graders!  You are an incredible group for us to learn and play with on a daily basis!

3RD GRADE NEWS

The Third Graders would like to have an ongoing school wide pop can drive to collect money to buy books. We would then make book baggies for children at Georgetown (readers that struggle either with interest, skills or financially) to read over the summer. We would also like to donate our gently used books that we have “grown out of” to the younger grades. During this project we will be gathering data, making wish lists and in the end purchasing books so please send in your empty cans to either Miss VanArkel or Mrs. McDonald’s classroom.

5TH GRADE INFORMATION–VERY IMPORTANT NEW Immunization Requirements for 2010-2011 School Year ~ We have recently been notified by the State that beginning with the next school year, all incoming 6th graders (current 5th grade students) will have additional immunization requirements as stated below:

1.  Two doses of Varicella vaccine or have a history of having chickenpox.
2.  One dose of meningococcal vaccine.
3.  One dose of tetanus/diphtheria/acellular pertussis (Tdap) (if 5 years or more have passed since last dose of tetanus/diphtheria vaccine – DTaP, Td or DT).

If your child needs immunizations, please make work of completing these immunizations during the 5th grade school year. Doing so will be a great help to the Middle School Secretaries who need to check for immunization compliance for every 6th grade student in our district.

Please be advised, that any child who has not had all of his or her immunizations will not be allowed to start 6th grade.

Georgetown Germs

If you take a walk through our building, you will hear lots of coughing and sneezing…and see children with runny nose and red eyes.  The seasonal type viruses have arrived sooner and many of our students and staff have picked up one or more of the viruses already.

To help us keep everyone healthy, please keep your children home until they are FEVER FREE FOR 24 HOURS. This fever free time  =  fever free with no medication to keep the fever away— a 24 hour period in which the child has not had motrin, advil, tylenol  AND they have been fever free during this time.  This is key to preventing the spread of these viruses to other children.

Mr. Rob, his custodial staff and the teaching staff at our school are doing all we can to disinfect door knobs, working surfaces, and school utensils.  We need your help in keeping your children home if they do not feel well.illness, virus, flu

Finally, we have had parents contact us to share that their children were diagnosed with the flu.  We are monitoring these reports and we continue to urge parents to not send children back too soon.  The CDC has helpful answers to common questions regarding the H1N1 virus.  For more information, click on the link in the upper right corner of this blog.

Welcome Back…Chalk Style!

The staff of Georgetown spent the past week immersed in curriculum meetings. These meetings help us to improve our teaching instruction and provide time to share best practice strategies with teachers from around the district.

We heartwere also busy welcoming you back with chalk drawings and fun photos from around the school.

These have been mixed into a special slide show to welcome you back to the 2009-10 school year. It will be the best yet because we are BETTER when we are TOGETHER!

And…a special note of thanks to Mr. Rob, our head custodian, and his TOP NOTCH OUT OF THIS WORLD custodial staff.  They have spent the entire summer cleaning, painting, and polishing every single inch of our building…and it looks fabulous.  If you see Mr. Rob, Lani, Ashley or Whitney in the hallway or on the grounds, please give them a shout out of thanks for their hard work.   They truly make our building shine!

Georgetown Recycles Batteries

In our effort to be GREEN, we are now offering battery recycling at Georgetown.  Mr. Rob, our head custodian, is responsible for setting this up for our school community.  He has placed a battery recycling container in the entrance of the building.

battery recyclingWe accept all batteries EXCEPT CAR BATTERIES.

We will continue to offer paper recycling with the Paper Gator, located in the front parking lot.  As a school community, our fifth grade students assist in the recycling of our paper each week.   We are excited to add battery recycling to our mission of being a GREEN SCHOOL.

International Artists

AubreyIn April of 2009, Mrs. DeWeerd invited our school to enter an international art exhibition in China.   Our  sister school  Raey Guang is in Pingtung, Taiwan, and  she felt this would be a natural connection for our students.

Mrs. Brouwer, our art teacher, selected five works of student art and submitted them to the 40th Annual World School Children’s Art Exhibition. This exhibition is held each August at the National Taiwan Arts Education Center in Taipei, Republic of China, and features children’s artwork from all over the world.

SheriTWO of our student pieces were selected for display in the exhibition – Aubrey’s “Happy Robot” and Shari’s “Winter Pine”.

Selection for the Taiwan exhibition is a great honor and our Georgetown artists deserve congratulations for their hard work!  Their pieces were selected from over 30,000 submissions (yes, thirty thousand!) from 53 countries. Aubrey and Shari will be given a “Certificate of Merit” sent to me from the Republic of China for their participation in the Exhibition. Congratulations, Georgetown Artists!

We received a beautiful catalog that contains color images of the World School pieces that were awarded Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals in the competition. It will be on display in the art room….stop in for a look at the award winning artwork created by children living in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Bolivia, Brunei….and 47 other countries!

Both pieces of art will now be added to our permanent collection so that they can be appreciated and honored for years to come.

Many thanks to Mrs. DeWeerd for encouraging us to submit work, to Mrs. Brouwer for taking the time to safety pack and ship this work to China, and to our artists (Shari & Aubrey) for creating the work that showcased our wonderful school and country!
